Welcome back!
** Graphic Display of loose skin around my stomach near the end — Viewers may want to ensure a bag is available ** Today’s episode I deal with the one of the most common questions people ask me after hearing of my 200 pound weight loss. That is, “do you have much problems with loose skin?” In the end, I have to admit that I do have a bit of loose skin (I affectionately & sometime not so affectionately my “SharPei”) around my torso and legs, but it could be much worse. I could have the …
I’m just going to throw this out there, it means nothing.
But I saw a news clip of a lady who needed a 100,000 dollar heart operation. Instead she went to India and had it done for 10,000 including air fair.
The news program went on to say how safe it is over there.

I am thinking that going back up to a 40+” from a 34-36″ waist just to fill out the loose skin probably isn’t advisable. Bulking up legs and arms might be possible, but having that musculature on your core just isn’t realistic at least for me.

I saw a pic of Arnold, topless. I’m not sure how old he is now but I thought I saw saggy skin on him. I imagine that the dynamics of bulking up with muscles and just getting fat would have the same effect of stretching the skin.
I guess the point I’m trying to make is that loose skin after a weight loss might be able to be tightened up by increasing muscle size. You’d be bulking up again but with muscle.
Just a thought, not sure of any of this.

Given your age, if you lose the weight you should have a good chance to not have any loose skin or stretch marks when you are done. Just focus on doing both resistance training to build muscle under the skin and cardio to lessen the subcutaneous fat.

Ubercow000, you are a total cow communicating the way you do. Obviously a lot of issues and little compassion. Oh and no I am not some 30 year old who does hours of cardio however most are not properly educated due to the bogus marketing schemes of so called health companies. My advice would be share your knowledge and STOP bashing people you are doing no good for yourself or the world. Negativity is a waste of time. To your health and improved communication skills.

What is the mechanism that lifting will shrink it?
Lifting can only do so much to get fit. You may build muscles, but you won’t be able to work longer than 30-45 minutes. By doing both, I prove that I can not only lift more than I did when I was 18 years old in the Army and run for 4 hours at a stretch.
What are you not man enough to prove what your body can do now? As for your tone, idiot, I don’t have the time for it.

Yes weight lifting will get rid of it.
How are you skeptical?
You would be stupid not to lift weights, you should of actually started lifting while you lost the weight, that way you would not have loose skin right now, idiot.
Congrats on being like a 30 year old women who you see at the gym humping cardio machines.
Man up, lift heavy, and lift hard.

Congrats on your weight loss!
Weight lifting or resistance training will help fill the skin with muscle and potentially help build definition. It won’t help shrink it anymore than cardio will. If the loose skin is on your arms, certainly building up your biceps and triceps will aid in tightening the skin in that area, but only by refilling it muscle not by shrinking it.

I lost nearly 100 pounds from August 2006 to December 2006 and the loose skin is still there.
Does anyone know if weightlifting will get rid of it? Many people tell me that’s how you ride yourself of it, but I’m very skeptical of this. It just sounds like wishful thinking.

And if fast weight loss is damaging to the skin, explain to me why mine is has bounced back to much better levels than I have ever seen on other WLS or morbid obesity shows. I lost at an average 4-5 pounds consistently each and every week. What is the mechanism of damage to the skin, and then why was I prevented being the poster boy of Extended Induction (one year) and faster weight loss.

Fine. Explain to me how the skin is damaged on a non-starvation level diet weight loss. You are certainly entitled to be wrong, but if you are going to assert that as a fact, I need proof. Simplying losing weight while maintaining adequate nutrition is not going to cause damage.

You are incorrect, many people have stretch marks as the results of sudden and extreme weight loss. Feel free to consult with a dermatologist on this matter. You are entitled to your opinions.

The stretchmarks are a result of the excess weight not of the weight loss. No one gains stretchmarks from losing weight. My stretchmarks were developed over 10 years of being overweight. They certainly didn’t develop in 2 weeks of weight loss.
As for the loose skin, the skin renews and repairs itself just as any other organ does. There are limits on that repair, but damage comes from being obese not weight loss.
In the end, my skin and its bounceback remain as testaments to what Akins can do.

Unfortunately stretch marks and loose skin are permanent and not temporary. I am not overweight, so for myself the Induction has worked very effectively when I have wanted to lose 10 lbs. I am aware of the fact that the Atkins diet is intended for long term weight loss and management. But again, for anyone wanting to lose a subtantial amount of weight, which the Atkins diet accomplishes very effectively in a short period of time, the very real side effects on skin should be reviewed.
bowulf
March 18, 2009
And my point was that the any unsightly side effects are at worst temporary, and more often than not present. You are now dehydrating your body. You are eliminating the glycogen in the muscle tissue, which contains 2 parts water to 1 part glucose. Your skin is just as hydrated during Induction as before.
Those wanting to get lean quickly are misguided as the focus should be on long term success not short term results. That is where most people get it wrong and end up gaining it back.

I agree with you that the Atkins diet is very beneficial to weight loss as I stated previously, particularly for those who are senstive to carbohydrates. I have always relied on Atkins when wanting to get lean quickly. However, the “rapidity” of weight loss absolutely has an effect on the skin particularly during the Induction phase when you are essentially dehydrating your body. Unfortunately, for many people such a shock to the body may result in what some consider unsightly side effects.

The rapidity of the weight loss is not the issue. It is the quality of the diet. The skin will repair itself if nourished with adequate fatty acids and proteins, which the Atkins Diet has plenty in intake unlike most diets. The Atkins Diet is actually appropriate to any wanting to eat healthy for the first time and redefine their relationship to food. It’s the reason I am still on the diet 4 years after reaching goal — who wants to be a slave to carbohydrate and insulin spikes.

Same to you! Very impressive weight loss!

The one real problem with the Atkins “Induction phase” is that a person looses weight very rapidly. The negative consequence of losing weight so rapidly may be loose skin and stretch marks. Skin requires water and optimum nutrition in the form of key vitamins and minerals to remain healthy looking. Yes, the Atkins diet is very beneficial to weight loss however for those individuals who want to lose a substantial amount of weight quickly, it is perhaps a good idea to realize the side effects.
